The wind shifted before the sun cleared the eastern ridge, carrying with it the scent of salt and rain. By midmorning, the harbor was astir.

Mara tightened the sail line and scanned the horizon. Beyond the breakwater, a single mast appeared, then another.

Captain Elias stood beside her, his gaze steady. “They’re running late.”

He nodded once. “Either way, we’ll be ready.”

The crew moved with practiced hands. Barrels were secured, ropes coiled, and the maps were folded into oilskin.
